Drawn by John Durkin for the January 19, 1884, issue of *Harper's Weekly*, this wood engraving shows Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's statue while it was still under construction in France. Bartholdi designed the monument as a gift from the French people to the United States, and in 1884 the full figure was being assembled in Paris, far from its eventual site in New York Harbor. Wood engraving was the standard way to reproduce drawings in magazines of the period, so the picture shows how many American readers first encountered the statue, long before it stood over the harbor. The statue was dedicated in October 1886.
