Recorded on April 20, 1929, this glass negative shows Herbert Hoover at an event involving the American Society of Newspaper Editors, only weeks after he took office as the 31st president. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented political life in the capital in the early twentieth century, made the plate, which was donated to the Library of Congress in 1947. Viewers should notice the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which result from natural deterioration of the original coatings.
