On May 16, 1929, roughly two months after his March inauguration, President Herbert Hoover appeared with members of a fraternity, as the title records. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials, visitors and public events in the early twentieth century. It survives as a glass negative, and like many plates of its age, it shows streaks and small blemishes from the gradual deterioration of its original coating, which are worth keeping in mind when viewing it.
