Herbert Hoover is shown here with a group of foreign newspapermen on May 28, 1929, just months after he took office as president. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented officials, visiting dignitaries and public events in the capital for several decades, made the negative, which was later given to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947. Press meetings like this one were a regular part of the White House routine, and the glass plate offers a direct view of how the administration courted the foreign press during its first year.
