The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, held in Seattle in 1909, drew visitors to the city's shoreline at a time when the Pacific Northwest was working to present itself as a gateway to Alaska and Asia. The fair was built on the university grounds, and its temporary buildings and landscaped courts were meant to show off the region's growth in timber, shipping and trade. Photographs like this one record how the fairgrounds looked to the crowds who came by boat and rail, and they remain a useful view of a city only a few decades removed from its frontier beginnings.
