The Geyser Basin shown here was one of the attractions on the grounds of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, which Seattle held in 1909 on the University of Washington campus beside Lake Washington. The Agricultural and Mines buildings in the background housed exhibits meant to show the region's farm output and mineral wealth, and the fair was designed to draw investment and trade from the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. The caption card gives no date for the photograph, but its 1909 tracing fits the fair's run that year. Photographer F.H. Nowell made the picture for the exposition, which copyrighted it under the number X358.
