Rogers Rock, on the western shore of Lake George in New York, gives this view its setting, and the rocking chairs and terrace suggest a guest's-eye look at the water from the grounds of a resort hotel. The rock takes its name from Major Robert Rogers, whose colonial rangers traveled this lake during the French and Indian War in the 1750s. By the early 1900s, Lake George had become a popular summer destination for well-to-do travelers, and hotels like this one offered porches and lawns where visitors could sit and enjoy the scenery. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, produced many such views to promote American travel destinations.
