Chautauqua, New York, in 1925 was best known as the summer home of the Chautauqua Institution, a lakeside community on Chautauqua Lake in the state's southwestern corner. Founded in 1874 as a summer school for adult education, religious study, and the arts, it drew families who lived in rented cottages and attended daily lectures, concerts, and sermons. The institution's Amphitheater was the center of its public life, and John Philip Sousa, the march composer who led his own concert band, was a familiar name on the Chautauqua circuit. Sousa's concerts there reflected how the movement brought big-city entertainment to small towns and rural audiences across the country during the years between the world wars.
