The steamship Cherokee is the focus of this view of the St. Johns River at Jacksonville, where piers and wharves handled the passenger and freight traffic that made the city a busy river port in the late 1800s. This is a 5 by 7 inch glass negative dated between 1880 and 1897, and its attribution to photographer William Henry Jackson rests on an 1898 catalog of his views. Jackson is better known for his western survey photographs, but his interest in transportation and working waterfronts gives this scene a useful record of how steamboats shaped commerce along the river.
