Vic Saier, the Chicago Cubs first baseman, is the subject of this glass negative, one of many player portraits the Bain News Service produced in the 1910s. Saier spent most of his major league career with the Cubs in the years before World War I, when the team was building its following in Chicago. The Bain agency, a New York photo service founded by George Grantham Bain, sold pictures to newspapers and magazines, so images like this one moved quickly from plate to print. The record gives no date, and its title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion remains unknown.
