Orval Overall is the figure at the center of this 1910 image, shown mid-throw in front of a baseball grandstand, which places the moment on a ballpark field rather than in a studio. Overall pitched for the Chicago Cubs during the team's strong years in the early 1900s, and he later became known for a sharp curveball and a steady hand on the mound. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news and feature pictures taken in the early twentieth century, many of them of sports figures and city life. Its August date places it in the heart of the Cubs' season, when crowds filled Chicago's ballparks and the sport was a central part of the city's daily life.
