The Eastland, a passenger steamer, rolled onto its side while still tied to its dock on the Chicago River on July 24, 1915, as passengers were boarding for a company excursion. The disaster killed 844 people, many of them Western Electric employees and their families, and it remains one of the deadliest maritime losses in Great Lakes history. The Bain News Service, a commercial agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers, recorded the wreck on glass negative, preserving a rare view of the ship lying on its side in the water.
