A steam locomotive pulling out of Yokohama fills this three-sheet woodcut triptych, and the subject itself marks a turning point. The line it depicts was Japan's first railway, linking Shimbashi in Tokyo with Yokohama and opening in 1872, the year this print is dated to. The artist, Baidō Kunimasa III, signed the sheets, and Iseya Kenkichi published the work. Their decision to treat a new machine and its passengers as a popular subject shows how quickly the railway became part of public life. The wide triptych format lets the engine stretch across the full scene, so the print works as a record of a technology that had only just arrived.
