Carriages, rickshaws, and foreign visitors crowd the road in this color triptych, which Ichiyōsai Kuniteru II signed and issued in 1871, the early Meiji period. The scene is set at Takanawa, a stretch of the Tōkaidō road on the edge of Tokyo, where new Western-style vehicles and the recently introduced rickshaw mixed with traditional travel. The record notes that the left sheet is missing, so the surviving panels show only part of the original composition, but they still capture a moment when the city's streets were changing quickly.
