Larchmont, New York, in 1904 was a village on the Long Island Sound shore of Westchester County, about 20 miles from Manhattan and largely built up as a commuter suburb in the decades after the railroad arrived. The Larchmont Yacht Club, founded in 1880, gave the waterfront much of its social life, with sailing races and summer regattas drawing residents and visitors from the city. Families who worked in Manhattan rode the New York, New Haven and Hartford line to the village station each morning, and the area's large lots and shaded streets reflected a wealthy suburban ideal. This view shows the village as its residents would have known it, with its houses, harbor, and the Sound laid out together.
