The record gives this glass negative the title "Cloyd, Gill," but that name comes from unverified data written on the negative or its sleeve, so the sitter's identity remains an open question. It dates to about 1922, when the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio, was producing a large body of portraits and news pictures on glass plates. The streaks and blemishes visible on the surface come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings over the decades. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
