In 1909 Panama was a young nation, having separated from Colombia in November 1903, and both of its coasts were busy with the United States' canal project. The Panama Railroad Company, whose controlling stock the Pennsylvania Railroad had held since the 1880s, crossed the isthmus and carried much of the freight and passenger traffic between the Atlantic and Pacific before the canal opened. Piers like this one received steamers from New York and New Orleans, unloading machinery, cement, food, and supplies for construction camps, and loading fruit and other produce for the return trips. Sanitation crews were working to bring yellow fever and malaria under control, and the railroad and its docks were central to feeding and housing the thousands of workers on the isthmus.
