Chenango County, New York, in 1802 was a young frontier county, organized only a few years earlier in 1798 out of the larger Tioga County. Its settlers were mostly farm families who had moved in from New England and the Hudson Valley after the Revolution, clearing land along the Chenango River and its tributaries. Life centered on farming, sawmills, and gristmills powered by the streams, with lumber and grain as the main goods to sell. Roads were rough, and the region was still far from the markets that the Erie Canal would later open to the west. Norwich, the county seat, served as the place where courts, local government, and trade came together for the surrounding countryside.
