In this 1919 French lithograph, an advertisement for the Ideal Waterman fountain pen recasts the pen as a weapon: its title, "Porte plume Ideal Waterman, l'arme de la paix," means "Carry the Ideal Waterman pen, the weapon of peace." The year matters. The Treaty of Versailles was signed in June 1919, and the poster's sales pitch borrows the mood of a world turning from war to diplomacy. The allegorical treatment of peace, along with the signature "Ogeacute," shows how commercial artists of the period adopted the language of the peace settlement to sell everyday goods.
