Here a veiled woman kisses a soldier on the cheek beneath the single word "Merci," a print made after a design by L. Sabattier. Images of French women thanking Allied soldiers circulated widely in illustrated magazines and postcards during and after the war, and this one dates to 1919, the year after the Armistice of November 1918. The veil and the sentimental pose were common visual shorthand for gratitude and grief at once, and they show how popular print culture framed the war's end as a debt of affection owed to the men who had fought.
