Few wartime posters carry as much symbolic weight as this one, which places the French tricolor above the cathedral at Strasbourg, a city that had been under German rule since 1871. The artist, Hansi, was the pseudonym of Jean-Jacques Waltz, an Alsatian illustrator whose satirical drawings of German officials made him a target of the German authorities before he fled to France in 1914. Printed in 1918 to promote the French government's fourth war loan, the poster uses the cathedral's Gothic silhouette to suggest that Strasbourg's return to France would bring peace, liberty and justice to the world.
