A 1916 color lithograph pairs a rooster and a coat of arms with a direct appeal to subscribe to a French war loan. The poster promotes subscriptions through the Société Centrale des Banques de Province, a group of provincial banks whose name points to the regional networks that helped sell government bonds to ordinary savers. By 1916, France was financing a costly war largely through borrowing, and posters like this one presented lending to the state as a patriotic duty. The rooster, a long-standing symbol of France, gives the design its national character.
