Marianne, the national personification of the French Republic, stands at the center of this 1917 color lithograph, flanked by the tricolor, and the lettering announces the third National Defense Loan. France raised money through a series of such war loans to pay for its effort on the Western Front, and posters like this one were a major way to reach ordinary citizens and persuade them to buy bonds. The design is signed by the artist A. Lelong, and its patriotic imagery shows how the state tied personal savings to national duty during the war.
