Few wartime posters were as direct about money as this one, which promotes the Fourth National Defense Loan of 1918 and carries the name of the Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas, a major private bank that helped sell French government bonds. France financed much of its war through a series of such loans, sold to ordinary citizens as well as investors, and posters like this one urged savers to see their money as a patriotic duty. By 1918, after four years of fighting, the appeals leaned on the idea that every subscription would help bring the war to an end.
