The Fourth National Defense Loan, promoted here, was a French government bond drive in 1918 that asked ordinary citizens to lend money to the state to help pay for the last year of the First World War. Taxes alone could not cover the cost of the army and its supplies, so France relied heavily on war loans like this one. Posters of this kind were pasted on walls and in public squares, using patriotic appeals to persuade shopkeepers, farmers and workers to buy a bond. The message ties private savings directly to the front lines.
