Wartime appeals often borrowed religious imagery, and this 1918 lithograph for the Union-Bank's Eighth War Loan does so openly. Its subject headings name women, altars and coins, which suggests that lending money to the state is framed as a kind of sacrifice. The slogan "Durch Sieg zum Frieden" ("Through victory to peace") promised that subscribing would help bring the fighting to an end. Austria-Hungary had been financing the war through a series of these public loans since 1914, and by 1918 the appeals were growing more urgent as shortages and inflation deepened at home.
