The title, *Für die Kriegsanleihe!* ("For the War Bond!"), points to what this 1917 German color lithograph was built to do: sell government war loans to the public. Germany ran several such subscription drives during the First World War, and posters like this one carried the appeal into streets, shop windows and public buildings. The presence of angels in the design, a motif the catalog records as a subject, shows how propaganda of the period drew on familiar religious imagery to present lending money to the state as a moral duty. The artist is known only through a 1918 poster journal, which makes the print a useful example of how wartime advertising borrowed spiritual language to win support.
