This 1917 item is a Christmas appeal from the Bavarian Red Cross, titled in German "Weihnachts-Sammlung ... für die Feldgrauen," or Christmas collection for the field-gray soldiers at the front. The name refers to the gray-green uniforms German troops wore by then, and the wording shows that the drive was aimed at men on the front lines rather than at the civilian public. By the third Christmas of the war, such collections were meant to send gifts, food and comforts to soldiers far from home, at a time when shortages were growing across Germany. The piece is a useful reminder of how the war reached home-front life through charity and public appeals.
