The Grand View Hotel stood on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, near Grand View Point, where early visitors could look straight down into the gorge from the hotel grounds. Built in the late 1890s, it was one of the first lodgings at the rim and drew travelers who arrived by stagecoach over rough roads from the railhead at Williams. This c1907 view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that produced many scenic photographs for railroads and travel promoters eager to bring tourists to the Southwest. The picture shows how the Canyon was presented to visitors of that era as a destination reached by effort and adventure.
