Rows of tall iron shelving stretch back into the dim distance in this late-1890s view of a library book stack, the kind of interior that was then new to American public buildings. Bookstacks of this type used cast-iron frames and open floors of glass or metal so that light could pass between levels, letting a library hold far more volumes in a smaller footprint. The photograph's date is uncertain, placed only somewhere between 1896 and 1900, but it captures a moment when libraries were rebuilding their collections and their architecture around the growing demand for public reading. Its precise location is not identified in the record.
