Stacks of books rise in this picture as the subject itself, with the shelves and spines forming the composition rather than any single reader or room. The record gives only a rough date, somewhere between 1890 and 1930, so it is best read as a glimpse of how libraries and private collections were kept in the decades around the turn of the twentieth century. In that period, bound volumes were heavy, expensive and often shelved flat or stacked when space ran short, and photographers of the time found them a useful study in texture and repetition. The print is held by the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division.
