Theodore Roosevelt Jr., the eldest son of President Theodore Roosevelt, is shown here in his role as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, a post he held in the early 1920s under Secretary Edwin Denby. The record dates the print to around March 1921 and credits it to Underwood and Underwood, a commercial photography firm that supplied press images to newspapers across the country. Roosevelt Jr. had served as a combat officer in the First World War and later became known for his political career, so the portrait captures him at a point when he was beginning to build a public profile of his own. Because the date and caption come from an old card and have not been independently verified, the exact circumstances of the sitting remain uncertain.
