Two men stand together on a flight of steps in this full-length 1924 portrait from the National Photo Company's Washington studio files. One is Theodore Roosevelt Jr., the eldest son of the former president, then building his own public career. The other is Charles Lathrop Pack, a longtime leader of the American Forestry Association, whose work promoting tree planting and forest conservation made him a prominent figure in the conservation movement of the 1920s. The formal pose and the staircase setting were typical of official Washington portraiture of the period.
