Port Said, the Mediterranean gateway to the Suez Canal, is the setting for this portrait of former President Theodore Roosevelt and his son Kermit. The two traveled together on the 1909 to 1910 African expedition, which collected specimens for the Smithsonian and took them through Egypt on the way to and from East Africa. Roosevelt had left the White House in 1909, and his travels drew wide press attention. The photograph was made by M. Etienne Jusserand, as the record notes, and it shows a father and son on a journey that was part scientific undertaking and part long adventure.
