Theodore Roosevelt and his second wife, Edith Kermit Roosevelt, rest side by side in a simple plot at Youngs Memorial Cemetery in Oyster Bay, on Long Island, New York. Roosevelt died at his Sagamore Hill home nearby in January 1919, and he was buried in the small village cemetery his family had used for generations rather than in a grander national setting. Edith, who outlived him by three decades, was laid beside him after her death in 1948. The plain stone and quiet setting reflect the family's preference for privacy, a contrast with the vigorous public life that had made Roosevelt one of the most recognizable figures of his era.
