Kermit Roosevelt, the former president's son, is the figure at the center of this scene, which shows a near miss during the family's hunt in British East Africa. Theodore Roosevelt made the trip in 1909 and 1910, after leaving the White House, and the expedition collected specimens for the Smithsonian Institution. Its caption card includes the tag "Animals--Cheetahs," suggesting the danger came from a big cat, though the record gives no fuller account. The image is a color halftone reproduction of a photoprint, the kind of illustrated reprint that carried expedition photographs to a broad public.
