Roosevelt is shown choosing the men who would lead the safari caravan, a task that mattered greatly when large numbers of porters carried supplies, tents, and equipment across the country. After leaving the presidency, he traveled in British East Africa in 1909 and 1910, hunting and collecting specimens for the Smithsonian. This image survives as a color halftone reproduction, a process that turned a black-and-white photograph into a colored print for magazines and books of the period. The copyright credit to The Illustration Bureau points to the strong public interest in pictures of the expedition.
