Roosevelt kneels beside the carcass of a rhinoceros, with a large dead bird laid out nearby, in a scene the caption places in Africa around 1909. That was the year he left the presidency and set out on a long hunting expedition in East Africa, which collected specimens for the Smithsonian Institution. The photograph survives as a lantern slide by Edward Van Altena, a glass-plate format that was projected before audiences during lectures and talks about the trip. The caption-card information is unverified, but the pose shows how such trophy photographs presented big-game hunting as both sport and scientific collecting.
