Standing with one hand on a horse's reins, Theodore Roosevelt poses behind the head of a dead rhinoceros in this view from his African hunting trip, around 1909. The trip followed his time in the presidency and was carried out with the Smithsonian Institution, so the specimens collected were meant for museum study as well as sport. His son Kermit, who accompanied him, is linked to the collection that holds this slide. The record credits the lantern slide to Edward Van Altena, though it marks that attribution as unverified.
