Here Theodore Roosevelt stands over a rhinoceros he has shot, rifle in hand, on the East African hunt he began in 1909, weeks after leaving the presidency. The expedition collected specimens for the Smithsonian Institution and included his son Kermit, whose collection this image comes from. Lantern slides like this one were a common way to share such trips with audiences at lectures and club meetings, and the hunt drew wide newspaper coverage. The caption card credits the slide to Edward Van Altena, a detail the record does not independently verify.
