Few images from Theodore Roosevelt's African expedition capture the danger of the hunt as directly as this one, which shows a bull rhinoceros charging. The photograph is dated to about 1909, the year Roosevelt left the presidency and set out for British East Africa with his son Kermit and a party collecting specimens for the Smithsonian Institution. Charging animals were a real hazard on big-game hunts of the period, and photographs like this one helped American audiences follow the expedition from afar.
