Theodore Roosevelt's 1909 hunting expedition to British East Africa, now Kenya, drew enormous press attention, and this color halftone reproduces a photoprint of the former president on the Athi Plains, where the party pursued lions. The record notes that the original photograph was copyrighted by Phelps Publishing Co., a Springfield, Massachusetts firm that issued popular illustrated material, though the caption-card details are unverified. Roosevelt's safari, organized with the Smithsonian and financed partly by Scribner's, collected specimens for the National Museum and produced a series of dispatches that made African big-game hunting a national fascination. Halftone reproductions like this one were a common way to bring such photographs into magazines and homes in the early 1910s.
