Kermit Roosevelt, the second son of President Theodore Roosevelt, is shown wading through a river in Mesopotamia, the region that is now Iraq. He had joined the British Army during the First World War and later served in the Mesopotamian campaign, where Britain fought the Ottoman Empire along the Tigris and Euphrates. The photograph dates from 1918 but was not published until March 1925, so it captures a casual moment of wartime travel rather than a staged public event. It is a useful glimpse of the Roosevelt family's ties to the war beyond the Western Front.
