Kermit Roosevelt Jr., a grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt, faces the camera in this head-and-shoulders portrait, made sometime between about 1950 and 1960. Born in 1916, he built a career that spanned military service and intelligence work, and he is best known for his role in the 1953 operation that helped bring about the removal of Iran's prime minister, Mohammad Mosaddegh, an episode historians still debate. The direct, frontal pose and plain background were common in formal portraits of the period, which helps place the image in the decade when his public profile was growing.
