Newburgh, on the west bank of the Hudson River in Orange County, New York, was a busy river and rail town around 1900. Its waterfront had long been shaped by shipping, brickmaking, and manufacturing, and the Hudson carried coal, lumber, and freight past its docks. The city was also served by the New York Central and Erie railroads, which tied its factories and wholesale houses to New York City and beyond. Newburgh had a long memory as well: George Washington had headquartered nearby during the Revolution, and the town took pride in that connection. A bird's-eye view from this period would have shown a city of church spires, mills, and rows of brick houses climbing the hillside above the river.
