Few views of the Library of Congress were drawn with the richness of this gouache, which shows the building as a finished architectural vision rather than a simple record. The Jefferson Building opened in 1897, after decades of debate over where the national library should stand, and its Beaux-Arts design made it a showcase of American ambition. Jules Guérin, a painter and illustrator known for luminous architectural renderings, would have been well suited to capture its domes, colonnades, and sculpted detail. The sheet's date range places it in the years just after the building's completion.
