The record names the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., though the title comes from caption data the Bain News Service supplied and has not been independently verified, so the exact vantage point is unknown. The Library began in 1800 as a reference collection for Congress housed in the Capitol, and it grew into the national library we know today. Its main building, the Jefferson Building, opened in 1897 and remains one of the city's most ornate Beaux-Arts landmarks. The picture comes from the Bain collection of glass negatives, made by a New York news photo agency that supplied images to newspapers in the early twentieth century.
