Rendered in opaque gouache on a large sheet, this view presents the Library of Congress's main building, which stands across the street from the Capitol and opened to readers in 1897. Jules Guérin, an American illustrator known for polished architectural renderings, painted it sometime between 1898 and 1925, while the library's Beaux-Arts palace was still a new symbol of national learning. Color views like this one gave the public a vivid picture of a monumental building, and its ornate facade and dome show how the young capital chose to express its ambitions in stone.
