Stereograph cards like this one were a staple of parlor entertainment in the 1890s, when a viewer held the card up to a stereoscope and two nearly identical images merged into a single three-dimensional scene. "Early Christmas" shows the holiday as the 1890s pictured it: a domestic morning scene built around children and their toys. The card was published in Philadelphia around 1897 by Griffith & Griffith, a firm that sold its views under its own name and copyright registration. Its subject, children with new playthings, reflects the sentimental, family-centered Christmas that stereo publishers returned to again and again.
