Kilburn's studio in Littleton, New Hampshire, produced this stereograph around 1897, and its title, "Just out of bed--Christmas morning," sets the scene before the viewer even looks at it. Stereo cards like this were viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, so the scene of children tumbling into their gifts appeared to stand in three dimensions. Benjamin West Kilburn built his business on such views, which were sold by the thousands to households eager for parlor entertainment. The card's copyright notice places it among the commercial scenes of the 1890s, when Christmas gift-giving to children was becoming an increasingly familiar domestic ritual.
